Entering numbers and notes
Tap a cell, then tap a digit on the number pad. Use Pen to enter an answer, and Pencil to add or remove notes in a cell. On iPad in landscape, the number pad sits in a sidebar next to the board.
Erase and Undo
Erase clears the selected editable cell, and Undo reverses the latest available move. Fixed clues that came with the puzzle cannot be changed.
Pause and resume
Pause hides the puzzle and stops its timer. Tap Resume on the paused card to return to play. Opening Settings or How to Play also pauses an active game until you resume.
Header tools
The header offers Pause, Sound, How to Play, and Settings. Sound toggles the game’s sound effects. The in-app How to Play explains the rules and controls, with themed examples of answers and pencil notes.
Themes and settings
Settings lets you choose the Modern, Classic, or Notebook theme, and controls sound, facts, related-cell highlighting, and automatic note tidying. While playing, tap the fact strip to see another fact. After solving, the result replaces the facts and stays visible even when facts are turned off.
New puzzles and difficulty
Tap the status face to request a new puzzle; the game asks before replacing a puzzle in progress or clearing a finished board. After solving, the completed board stays visible for inspection and returns when you reopen the app. Use the same face when you are ready for a new puzzle. Difficulty choices are Gentle, Steady, Tricky, and Fiendish, and each requests a new puzzle at that level with the same confirmation protection.
Statistics and progress
Your best times and puzzle statistics are stored locally on your device, and local progress normally restores when you reopen the app. Reset Statistics clears recorded statistics and best times while keeping the current puzzle; it does not delete scores already held by Game Center.
Game Center leaderboards (optional)
Leaderboards are an optional extra through Apple Game Center; local play works fully without them. Sign in to Game Center through the iOS Settings app. After you sign in, a puzzle you start and solve submits its elapsed time once to that difficulty’s leaderboard — Gentle, Steady, Tricky, and Fiendish each have one — shown in Apple’s native Game Center interface. The Leaderboards entry is in Settings and on each difficulty row of Best Times. Playing signed out sends nothing, and Reset Statistics does not delete scores Apple already holds.
